PNC SmartHome (2011)

The shape of the SmartHome has a simple rectangular shape to minimize surface area and maximize heat retention. High performance windows are triple-paned. Solar panels were later added when the home arrived at its permanent location.

Bath Fixtures

Water efficient fixtures were installed throughout the home such as dual-flush toilets and Moen Watersense faucets. Energy efficient lighting was also used.

Entry

The reclaimed wood arch is adorned with purple heart wood from a park grandstand in Lakewood, OH. The oak flooring is also reclaimed from a deconstructed house in Cleveland Heights through the Habitat for Humanity ReStore program.

Bedrooms

Plenty of windows provide natural light and reduce energy use. The natural wood flooring is a renewable resource.

What Makes it a Passive House?

See exactly what makes the PNC SmartHome a Passive House and how it was built to withstand Cleveland winters and remain energy efficient.

Moving Day

Have you ever seen a house on a truck? Moving a house is a huge undertaking, especially one with specialty walls and triple pane windows. Teams from the electric company, phone company, University Circle, Case Western University and local law enforcement we all on hand during the move.

Sample Wall Section

The SmartHome is airtight. All holes and seams in the building envelope are sealed. Special walls are designed to eliminate heat loss (thermal bridging) through the wall structure thus sealing the house similar to a thermos.
